Occurrence of ILT in the Fraser Valley W.R. Cox, DVM B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Lands Two separate outbreaks of ILT occurred in the same geographical region of British Columbia, the first between February and November 2006, the second between February and August 2007. In both instances, the affected flocks were primarily broiler chickens, but included specialty flocks and young broiler breeder replacement flocks. The age of affected flocks ranged between 4 weeks to 9 weeks. Gross and histological lesions were consistent with Laryngotracheitis. Confirmation of the diagnosis included PCR detection and isolation of the virus on egg embryo and tissue culture. PCR and Restriction Enzyme PCR revealed characteristics that were consistent with Chick Embryo Origin vaccine virus. No common point source of the virus could be detected, however spread of the virus appeared to be facilitated by manure handling, bird transport, and wind carriage. |
