Signs

                    Emaciated males

                    Elevated mortality

                    20-40 weeks of age

 

Post Mortem

                    Atrophy of musculature

                    No fat

                    Liver enlarged – focal pale areas in the parenchyma

                    Spleen enlarged

                    Bone marrow pale

 

Histopathology

                    Infiltration of liver and spleen with myelocytes

 

Aetiology

                    Retrovirus

                    Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV)

                    Sub-group "J" (ALV-J)

                    Meat type birds – more susceptible

 

Transmission

                    Vertical

                    Horizontal – hatcher – etc.

 

Control

                    Free breeders

                    Extensive testing of primary breeders

        Gsa test of cloacal swabs

        Antibody and viremia test

        Gsa egg albumen

        Gsa on meconium

        Gsa on albumen

Meat Breeder Males

                    Avian – extensive testing program

                    Arbor Acres – no problem

                    Cobb – no problem

                    Petersen – problem

                    Ross – problem

                    Shaver – no problem
