E. coli Associated Cellulitis in Broilers: Correlation with Systemic Infection, Microscopic Visceral Lesions and Skin Trimming

Detlef K. Onderka, James A. Hanson, Keith R. McMillan and Brenda Allan

In Alberta, cellulitis condemnations average 0.5% and are amongst the highest in Canada. Presently, all cellulitis affected birds are condemned for fear of systemic infection and public health implications. In a slaughterhouse sample of 102 affected birds, 83.3% had E. coli positive skin cultures, while 11.2% had positive heart cultures. Gross lesions of perihepatitis were found in 11.2%, infected oviducts in 6.7% and arthritis in 2.9%. Serotyping suggests that visceral infection occurs independent of cellulitis. The majority of birds with microscopic visceral lesions were culture negative. Skin lesions size ranges from 0.55 to 218.9 cm2 . All lesions under 16 cm2 and 64% of lesions up to 48 cm2 were suitable for trimming without causing contamination.
