Myelosarcoma in Broiler Breeder Cockerals

Victoria Bowes

Animal Health Centre

A flock of broiler breeder males experienced a slight increase in mortality at 15 weeks of age. Affected birds were noticed lying on their sides gasping for air. Birds were in good general condition. There were multiple soft, irregular, pale yellow masses associated with the spinal column, ribs and sternum. Microscopically, the neoplastic tissue consisted of a solid mss of round cells with large vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. The cytoplasm contained numerous round eosinophilic granules.  Tumours were often delineated by a fine connective tissue capsule. Mitotic index was high. Typical cells were also present in the pulmonary capillaries, hepatic sinusoids and peripheral blood indicating leukemia. A diagnosis of granulocytic myelosarcoma was made based upon cell morphology.

Myelosarcoma, also called myelocytoma, is a neoplasm of the myelopoietic cell line. It has been experimentally reproduced with specific strains of the leucosis/sarcoma group of retroviruses.
